Desert Mountain Four Wheel Drive Club

DMFWDC is a family-friendly 4x4 club based in Alamogordo, New Mexico.

Welcome to the Desert Mountain Four Wheel Drive Club website.

We’re a group of off-road enthusiasts who enjoy exploring local trails, learning from each other, and spending time outdoors with good people. Whether you’re brand new to off-roading or have years of trail experience, you’re welcome here.

Trails for Every Skill Level

Our area offers a wide variety of terrain, and our club runs reflect that. We explore everything from easy scenic forest roads to more technical trails and extreme buggy routes.

  • Beginner-friendly trails for stock or lightly modified vehicles
  • Moderate trails for drivers looking to build skills and confidence
  • Advanced and extreme trails for highly built rigs and experienced drivers

Trail difficulty is always communicated ahead of time, so you know what to expect and can choose runs that match your comfort level. Check out the Trail Descriptions for more detailed trail information.

New to Off-Roading? No Problem.

If you’re new to four-wheeling, you don’t need to worry about “keeping up” or having the perfect setup. Many of our members started with stock vehicles and learned as they went. We believe off-roading should be enjoyable, not stressful. On a typical club run, you can expect:

  • A friendly, supportive group of drivers
  • A short driver meeting before hitting the trail
  • Spotting and guidance when needed
  • An emphasis on safety, teamwork, and fun

Monthly Runs & Club Activities

We host regular trail runs and events throughout the year. Our schedule includes local trails, special trips, and club gatherings that give members a chance to get to know each other off the trail as well. Check out our Events page to see upcoming runs and events.

Responsible Off-Roading

Desert Mountain 4WD Club is committed to responsible land use and trail stewardship adhering to the Tread Lightly Principles. We want to make sure these trails stay open and enjoyable for years to come.

The club’s trail system offers a wide range of experiences, from scenic desert routes and mountain passes to technical rock crawling and sandy washes, ensuring opportunities for drivers of all skill levels. Together, the trails and vehicles reflect the club’s commitment to adventure, responsible off-roading, and the enjoyment of the desert and mountain environments.

Baby Rattler in Rattle Snake Canyon

This trail starts in Rattle Snake Canyon.  Once you get to the tree take a right, should be no problem to find, how many trees could there be.  This is a 5 to 7 rated trail, it has two routes you can take, the hard route and the harder route at the beginning and at the exit of the trail.  The entrance is a nice little climb next to one of the few trees in the canyon. Once you start up the trail there is an optional route to the left which will take you up a short hard area then you climb over the hill and drop back into the normal trail. Getting up the first part of this is harder than the normal route, it’s the climb over and down into the arroyo that might make you pucker if you start sliding sideways, ask me how I know.  Once you make your way thru the trail you have two options for the exit, a daunting looking climb to the left or up thru the arroyo on the right.  The right line is definitely harder. Once you get to the top you follow some roads back into Rattle snake canyon and head out.  This is a fun hard trail, once you know the lines it becomes a quick hard trip, if your rig, is built for it.  Enjoy.
