Power Line Road

“Can you hear the buzz in the air.”
-Brian
Rated: 5-6
- Trail Length: 18 miles approximately
- Elevation: 4578 to 5015
- Terrain Type: Steep hills, eroded roads, sandy bottom arroyo
- Major Obstacles: The first hill has gotten pretty bad at the top, loose rock and two ledges to get over
- Technical Ability: Novice with spotter
- Vehicle Recommendation: 33″ tires, a traction device due to the first hill
- Elevated Hazard: Possible roll-over on first hill climb
- Comment: You can enter this trail off of Highway 70 traveling east out of Tularosa, you will turn left on Helms Trail and go through the Tuli Creek. (It might be easier to run it out of Coyote Canyon and come down the hill.) The very first part of the trail will probably be the hardest part. It’s a steep climb up a hill with loose rock and a couple of ledges at the top. You will need someone that can get up it with a winch if you plan to run less equipped rigs. Power line road will offer some washed out areas. No telling what the condition is until we run it. It’s been a while. The video shows the first hill climb as do the pics.
General Information:
- This trail is located off of Highway 70 as you travel east out of Tularosa. It might be better to start in Coyote Canyon and exit onto Highway 70 due to the steep hill at the beginning of the trail, if you go into the trail off of Highway 70.
- Meet up location is in the empty lot next to Dollar General at the Y intersection of highway 54 and 70.
- There is an air-down and parking area on the side of the road as you head into the trail.
- There are a few different routes back to Coyote Canyon, your choice on how you want to come back.
- The trail could be harder or easier based on what the summer rains have done.
