The Joker

“You’re Joking me, right? “

Rated: 10

  • Trail Length: 7.5 round trip from air down point
  • Elevation: From 4461 to 4891 feet
  • Terrain Type: Sandy bottom arroyo, large ledges and steep rocky climbs
  • Major Obstacles: The ledges and the steep climb up large rocks, roll overs are very possible and breakage is likely.
  • Technical Ability: You better know what you’re doing on this one.  Extreme technical required.
  • Vehicle Requirements: Well built buggies, rear steer would be a plus. Winch required.
  • Elevated Hazard: Rolling multiple times down the hill.
  • Comment: This is another one of those trails we ran on 35″ tires back in the day, but due too erosion it is now a buggy trail.  The pics from 2001 are when we ran the Joker on our little 35″ tires.  We had to winch the top part but we all made it.  There are some pic’s of a buggy getting up to the top on there end of a winch cable. If you’re going to run this have a working winch.  If you got someone to go around the back side and come part way down to assist all the better.  Rumor has it that there have been a couple of buggies make it the whole way with out winching, I’ve yet to witness it.

General Information

  • This trail is located in Coyote Canyon, just north of Tularosa.
  • Meet up location is in the empty lot next to Dollar General at the Y intersection of highway 54 and 70.
  • There is an air-down and parking area on the side of highway 54 before you get to the overpass.
  • This is extreme buggy territory, I wouldn’t run a full body vehicle up it, unless you don’t mind some damage.
  • You can drive around the back side and come down the exit a bit to assist with winching if needed.  Just make sure who ever comes down is built enough to get out. Even the top is no joke. There are two winch points toward the top.
